MILLENNIALS VS GEN Z: ATM OR DIGITAL ONLINE BANKING

If you can remember the days of queuing by an ATM then you are definitely qualified to be called a Millennial. LOL! Digital banking has somehow found a way to transition from physical to online banking. Transactions now take minutes and boom, Alert!

We cannot deny the fact that both digital services are extremely helpful and innovative, however, their approaches are somewhat different. It’s like comparing how your older sibling still texts in full sentences and the younger sends a Snapchat streak of the exact same situation.

ATM’s have existed in Nigeria since 1989 providing a reliable and convenient way for people to access their cash. Remember when finding one was like finding a lifeline? You’d be out with friends, and someone would say, “I need to use the ATM.” Boom—everyone matches to the nearest machine. You’d stand there, punching in your PIN, hoping the ATM wouldn’t decide to “swallow” your card today.

Even though we’re living in a transfer-to-pay world, sometimes you just need cash. Do you really want to ask Iya Barakat, the road-side akara seller for her account number to make a 300 naira transfer? We can already imagine the look on her face.

Another GOATED moment for ATMs is when your banking app says, “uhmmm, not today” or your phone dies or your network is slower than usual. But ATMs? Always ready, 24/7, no excuses. Well, unless they’re out of cash… then we’re all in trouble again!

Digital Online Banking: The Future Is Here, Baby!

This is like the new kid on the block who has pretty much taken over the town. No more waiting in line, or looking for a pen to borrow in the banking hall to fill deposit slips, or hearing “Please, phone calls are not allowed in here” from the overzealous bank security.  Everything is now on your mobile device, and it’s as fast as a TikTok dance routine.

You could wake up at 2 am because for some reason, you are sweaty, turning from one side of the bed to another and you realize your electricity prepaid subscription has run out –that’s why the AC is no longer giving you Canada standard.  Then, you grab your phone, open your online banking app, and boom—it’s done. Back to sleeping like a baby with no life problems.

With Digital Online Banking, you get real-time updates. You cannot spend your money in peace again without the constant reminder of what you have left in your bank account. You just bought a new pair of sneakers for ₦30,000, and your banking app notifies you of a debit instantly. And if you’re not great with money, that notification hits differently. It’s like a daily reminder of your financial decisions. “Congrats on spending your savings on sneakers! Hope it is worth sleeping outside when your landlord comes for his rent!

Building Trust as a Financial Institution

Think about it this way: you walk into a salon, and the prices are all mixed up. You decide to braid your hair, feeling excited, and then—surprise!—the bill looks like it’s for a small car! That’s exactly how customers feel when financial institutions hide their fees. Be upfront about what customers can expect. No hidden fees, just good vibes and .

  • Go creative or go home: Don’t just sit behind your fancy screens, slide into their DMs—no, not like a clingy ex—but as a friendly bank! Respond to their questions and keep the conversation going.
  • Utilize social trends and conversations: Imagine a meme that says, “When you finally check your bank balance and it’s not what you expected—cue dramatic music.” People will share it, tag their friends, and suddenly, you’re the talk of the town and the best thing that has happened to them on social media since giveaways.
  • Leverage digital tools to enhance the customer experience: Offer secure online banking, easy access to information, and prompt support response.

When customers see that their data is safe and their needs are met quickly, they’ll trust you more. Without trust, your customers are like hungry invitees at an Owambe party with no jollof rice. They won’t stick around for long.
